What is a Doula?

The word "doula" comes from an ancient Greek word that translates to slave or servant! Traditionally, doulas were people who stayed with expecting mothers throughout their pregnancies, helped with their labor, sometimes even delivered babies, and helped mothers with breastfeeding and housework during the postpartum period. Today, there are many different kinds of doulas, all trained to support women during different stages of pregnancy and motherhood- birth doulas, postpartum doulas, loss doulas, sibling doulas, etc. Most doulas are hired to support expecting mothers physically and emotionally and to make sure they feel safe and informed throughout their pregnancy, labor, and postpartum experience. A birth doula will encourage the mother during pregnancy and childbirth to make sure that her requests are met and her decisions are informed. Birth doulas are able to help women change positions during labor, release tension during contractions and relax, and can advocate for laboring women when they are unable to advocate for themselves.
